Hurricane Teaching

Tomorrow we are starting out lessons. I wanted to start last week, but with Hurricane Irma coming it didn't happen. But, the mini lesson over the last week has been- preparedness. Olivia and I have been working on getting ourselves prepared for Hurricane Irma and the possibility of a power outage.

Our first step was to make sure we made a list of what we needed. Canned Soup, Veggies, Fruits, Chili; Snack foods, Breakfasts, powdered milk, little girl foods, and lots of water and Gatorade! We even got some Diet 7up. Root beer, and La Croix. Everything was organized by category and is ready for us to eat if we need to.

Next, we needed to get Flashlights in case the power went out and we could not see. We got quite a few flashlights at the dollar store. If you ever want to have a prep kit- start there for your basic needs including your first aid kits. Olivia was so excited because I found her the last Mickey Mouse flashlight. She could not put it down. I had to hide it for her so she would not run the battery out. Other than that, we stocked up on AAA and AA batteries. I let Olivia know that Hurricane season continues until November 30th, so we may need them at a later date.

The third prep step we covered was the importance of keeping all electronic devices charged up. If we have an emergency we need our phones to be able to call 9-1-1. Also, it keeps us updated on news and emergency happenings once we cannot watch the TV. Best part is her tablet for Mom and Dad to keep Olivia quiet and Calm during stressful times.

I would have to say- we're as ready as we're going to be. Now that Irma is knocking on our door I can do a little science with Olivia. Why and How do Hurricanes form; and what fuels them.
